Edgar and Toller were just about to get out of the car, just about to earn their fat payday, when the mobile went.

Edgar swore, but knew he daren't ignore it. It could only be Paget; no one else had the number. He snatched at the phone, his voice a harsh whisper, 'Jesus Christ! What do you want? I had her! She was there yards from me, so close she heard the fuckin' phone.' His teeth clenched as he watched the girl walk away. His money walked with her. 'Another few seconds and it would have been done.'

'I can't help that,' Paget snapped. 'It can't go down tonight. Something's happened. I can't have the girl coming to the clinic tonight.'

Edgar went a little crazy. 'I don't believe this. Why the fuck not?'

'Never mind why not,' Paget snapped again. 'I have my reasons. They don't concern you.'

His voice turned ugly. 'If you're trying to trick me out of my money. If you've found some other way of getting the girl-'

'Don't be a fool. The snatch is still on, only not tonight. Do I make myself clear?'

Edgar snarled a reply and slammed the phone against the dash. 'If that bitch is trying to trick us..'
